When Martin Jenkinson set up his first office above a shop in Wickersley, John Major was peparing to take the place of Margaret Thatcher, Germany had beaten Argentina to win the World Cup, and Sinead O'Conner was riding high in the charts with 'Nothing Compares To You'... and Martin had little idea that 21 years later he would be at the head of a team of 16 people, running the region's major commercial insurance brokerage.
The business has steered a course through two major recessions, two transforming changes of power at Number 10, many changes of approach in regional business strategy, and a massive process of consolidation in the insurance industry, leaving a fraction of the number of independant brokers that existed two decades ago.
"There's been nothing magical in the recipe," said Martin. "We employ good people who stay with us a long time, and we offer an exemplary level of service. That's what our clients want, and so they also stick with us, and recommend us to their colleagues."
