Obvious, But Necessary

It may seem the most obvious thing in the world, but the fact is that hundreds of businesses suffer uninsured losses every year, or have to make claims that could have been avoided, simply because they don’t take basic precautions in cold, icy and snowy weather.

Top of the chart for avoidable cold-weather problems are frozen pipes and consequent leaks. Even minor flooding can cause significant and expensive damage to property, stock and equipment, so:

  • Check the boiler and heating system, ensuring the thermostat is working correctly and that low level heating is automatically provided in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Clean gutters and drains to remove blockages.
  • Switch off the mains water supply to minimise water damage id shutting down over Christmas.
  • Turn off external taps.
  • Check the insulation of water pipes and cold water tanks.

Ironically, the other issue over Christmas can be fire, usually caused when premises have been left unattended with electrical equipment still running. So, follow the Fire Service advice and turn off the gas and any electrics where possible, removing plugs from the wall and switching off at the sockets.

Finally, double and triple check your security systems, including all points of access and CCTV equipment – there are some sack-carrying midnight visitors you don’t want to see this Christmas!
